It seems appropriate to dedicate my first post of 2011 to the material that I’m most excited to hear this year. We’ve got a few months to wait for the full glory of ‘Build a Rocket Boys!’, but I’m just going to put this out there now: based on the first track to be unleashed on the public, I have expectations so high that they need air traffic control clearance.
If ‘Lippy Kids’ is any indication as to what is to come, then we’re in for a treat. It’s Elbow. You can tell from the fragile beauty of the opening bars. You can tell from the unmistakable vocals of Guy Garvey. You can tell from what is probably going to be one of the best lyrics of 2011:
‘I never affected that Simian stroll’
Yes, this is vintage Elbow.
‘Build a Rocket Boys!’ is out in March. A series of live appearances have already been announced from the Spring through the Summer festival season. 2011 will be Elbow’s year. Again.
